MEGA Creation for Megamind MEGAmile at the Denver Rock N Roll Marathon, 2010

Yes, indeed this is 1000 cupcakes. Delicately hand frosted and intricately placed on the board in a very scientific manner. Our crew created a replica of Megaminds face for a 1000 cupcake mural to be displayed on October 17th at Denver's Rock N Roll Marathon. As runners approached mile 5 and ended mile 8 they were entertained/distracted by the magnificent Megamind mural.

This brilliant masterpiece took, 3 bakers, 4 decorators, 1 carpenter, 1 gopher and many, many, many hours of labor. Ironically, Cake Crumbs had never had the pleasure of taking on such a task. In the end it turned out spectacular and turned heads too.

Though we worked through the night and stayed awake for 36 straight hours, in the end it was quite worth it. We'd do it again without hesitation.

Here's a look at the process we went through to come up with our MEGAmural:

Megamind Mural 062.JPG
Step 1: A map of the image, in this case we made a grid. Each square represented one cupcake on the board.

Megamind Mural 067.JPGStep 2: You start to frost the cupcakes, in this case we had 356 light blue to frost, 48 medium blue, 151 dark blue, 111 white and 329 multi tone/color. 1000 in all to make the face.

Megamind Mural 070.JPGStep 3: Pay special attention to the fine details. This was the first eye in the mural, without the correct placement of the cupcakes, the eye would have been misrepresented thus destroying the integrity of the characters face.

Megamind Mural 094.JPGStep 4: Begin the placement of the cupcakes, find your center, dictate the map and lay down the cupcakes, all 1000 of them. This was tricky, especially when you look at the wrong row. At one point we had to recount 10 rows to find one cupcake out of place.

Megamind Mural 105.JPGStep 5: Stand back and continue counting and realize you have a forehead on the board.

Megamind Mural 111.JPGStep 5: Continue the counting, mapping and frosting. Here we are frosting the edges to create an end to each row.

Megamind Mural 116.JPGStep 6: Stand back and make sure your display looks like the picture. In this case we have the bottom half of Megaminds face.

Megamind Mural 117.JPGStep 7: Set up the display, in this case Megamind was being displayed at a near 45 degree angle, nearly impossible we thought, but.....

Megamind Mural 119.JPGwe carry on and amazingly enough it hasn't moved. Not a single cupcake moved.

Megamind Mural 132.JPGStep 8: Make some final adjustments.

Megamind Mural 149.JPGStep 9: Stand back and breath.

We did it, we really did it. Not ever creating a 1000 cupcake mural and having little idea how to accomplish one, we did it with lots of time and patience.

Thank you team for allowing this to be possible and achieving what we thought was near impossible.

Megamind in theaters beginning November 5th, 2010.  http://www.megamind.com/
